Ready, Set, Sketch: Healdsburg!

Come join us SATURDAY July 12, 2014 at 10am-1pm in Healdsburg for the next “Ready, Set, Sketch!” group outing (It also happens to be a World Wide Sketchcrawl day).
Healdsburg's Gazeebo in the Plaza
We’ll meet at 10am at the gazebo in the downtown plaza then disperse to sketch around the area. We’ll meet back at 1pm to share our sketches.

The town of Healdsburg has an endless supply of sketching opportunities, restaurants, wine tasting rooms, coffee shops, and books stores.

All you need is something to draw on and something to draw with (it’s also nice to have a chair to sit on).

Here’s a Google map link: http://goo.gl/maps/dHOSq

Parking is free but to avoid a time limit, it’s best to park a couple blocks from the plaza.

I’ll also be giving away one FREE copy of my book, The Artist on the Road: Impressions of Greece to one person in attendance.

The Raven Theater and Ravenous Cafe

Few things are more entertaining than seeing a live performance at a local theater followed by a cozy dinner. With television and the internet dominating today’s casual entertainment crowd, it’s a real pleasure to get out among the living and experience true 3D without the glasses.

The Raven Performing Arts Theater supports performances ranging from Classical (Philharmonia Healdsburg ), jazz (Healdsburg Jazz Festival), blues (Charlie Musselwhite), rock (Big Brother and the Holding Company), and variety shows such as Healdsburg’s home grown “Mr. Healdsburg” pageant. The Raven Players, Healdsburg’s resident theater group, also perform here, mounting ambitious and successful productions like Cats, Miss Saigon, and Chicago.

Performances like these are sure to work up an appetite, and next-door’s Ravenous Cafe is the perfect stop before or after a show. Seating up to 22 guests, this intimate spot features a menu that changes daily but often includes the ever popular crab cakes, fish tacos, and the famous Ravenous Burger.

Sketches from Ready, Set, Sketch: Dry Creek Valley!

Dry-Creek-General-Store-20131I had a great time last weekend with the Ready, Set, Sketch! group. There were 9 participants at different skill levels and all eager to sketch. We started off at the Dry Creek General Store, sketching from across the road. It was a foggy morning but it cleared about 11am.

Dry-Creek-Vineyards_sAt noon, we purchased some sandwiches from the Dry Creek Store and headed down the road to Dry Creek Vineyards which is one of the best picnic spots in the area, complete with shade trees, umbrellas, and picnic tables. Following a second sketch of the winery, Phil and I finished the day by tasting some of Dry Creek Vineyard’s wine. I especially liked their Chenin Blanc and Maritage.

Our next “Ready, Set, Sketch!” group outing will be August 10 in the Dry Creek Valley.

Some of the world’s best Zinfandels are grown and produced just west of Healdsburg in the Dry Creek Valley. The area is beautiful and there’ll be no shortage of things to draw. Bring your own drawing supplies and lunch, or purchase something tasty to eat at the Dry Creek Store.

We’ll meet out front of the Dry Creek Store, 3495 Dry Creek Road, just west of Healdsburg city limits on August 10 at 10am. See you there!

Healdsburg Clock Tower

Healdsburgs-Clock-Tower_s2About a dozen of us Ready, Set, Sketchers gathered in Healdsburg’s square yesterday to sketch the beautiful plaza. The weather was a perfect 80° with only a slight breeze. An Earth Day celebration filled the grassy area, providing music, atmosphere, and additional drawing opportunities. I chose to sketch the plaza’s iconic clock tower on the northwest corner of the plaza. Later in the afternoon, we rejoined at Healdsburg’s Center for the Arts to share our sketches, techniques, and the day’s experiences. Thanks to all who attended!
