Ready, Set, Sketch: Preston (Cloverdale)!

We have a special location this month, a historic home and church located in the community of Preston.
Preston was a small community located on the Russian River just outside of Cloverdale back in the late 19th Century.

Emily Preston (the founder of this community known as Madam Preston) at the age of 52, had an epiphany. As she described it, “Something fell from my eyes and suddenly the world was enveloped in a brilliant light.” From that moment on, she claimed a gift for diagnosing and treating illness. Some considered her a quack; others credited her with saving their lives. She had such a magnetic personality that patients followed her when she moved from San Francisco to Sonoma County. Even after recovering, many patients didn’t want to leave the community, so she let them build houses and live on the ranch rent free. A community began to grow. Eventually there was a school, railroad depot and general store.

We’ll be sketching the home and garden of one of the historic Victorians built on this property in 1899 and the old church too!

WHERE: Preston (Cloverdale) 204 Geysers Rd. Cloverdale.
DATE: Saturday May 11 (always the second Saturday of the month).

TIME: 10am-1pm
BRING: Hat, sunscreen, water, chair, and sketching supplies.
PLEASE: Carpool if you can. There will be limited street parking.

Ready, Set, Sketch: Cloverdale Auto Show!

Come join us SATURDAY Sept 9, 10am-1pm for the 24th Annual Cloverdale Car Show for the next “Ready, Set, Sketch!” group outing!

Last year we had a blast!

There’ll be over 200 classic cars and motorcycles lining the boulevard. There’ll also be a Bear Republic Pit Stop Beer and Souvenir booth, food booths and vendors. This is also a great opportunity to tune up your people drawing skills.

We’ll meet at 10am at Plank Coffee at 227 N. Cloverdale Blvd. The earlier you get here, the easier the parking, though you should be able to park within a block or two of downtown.

Pick’s Drive In

Pick's_sPick’s has been a local favorite in Cloverdale since it opened in 1923. Serving much of the same menu it did when it opened, bacon double cheese burgers, french fries, grill cheese sandwiches, and milkshakes, a few notable things have changed. Today all the burgers are made with hormone free Niman Ranch meats and veggie and black been burgers have been added to the menu for the health conscious. Although chain restaurants have recently created business competition, it’s great to see that a classic independent eatery with good food and a friendly staff can hold its own in this corporate 21st Century world.
